Scholar Landscape Plate – Meiji/Taishō c.1900

This is a beautiful antique Japanese Arita porcelain plate dating to the late Meiji–Taishō period (c. 1890–1920). • Form: Hexagonal dish/plate with slightly upturned rim • Decoration: Hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a scholar standing beneath a flowering tree, gazing toward mountains and waterfalls — a classic East Asian landscape motif. • Technique: Freehand brushwork in varying tones of blue; fine border pattern around the rim. • Back: Unglazed footring, glazed base with typical iron “freckling” and firing marks consistent with Arita production. • Condition: Good antique condition with no major cracks or repairs. Some natural rim toning, glaze imperfections, and firing specks typical of period pieces. Please review photos. This plate displays beautifully and is a fine example of Arita blue-and-white ware made for domestic use or export. The hexagonal form is less common than round plates and is especially collectible.
